Hampton wrestler tops in the province

Mike Murray emerged as champion at the Ontario Bantam wrestling finals.

 

OSHAWA- For Team Impact wrestler Mike Murray, winning the Ontario Bantam Championships will be nice to look back on but considering the results he's had this year, he has much to look forward to.

Murray, a Grade 8 student from Hampton, was the top wrestler in the 86 kg class at the provincial championships held at G.L. Roberts. He defeated Mike Meyers of an Orillia club 11-0 in the championship final.

It's a been a stellar year for Murray, who earlier this year, defeated a wrestler who went on to become the Canadian champion in the cadet age group, an age group Murray will join next year as a high schooler.

In other Impact results, Derek Falk was a silver medallist in the 43.4 kg class, Tommy Carroll took gold with a win in the finals of the 47 kg class over a Fallingbrook wrestler and James Gardiner was a silver medallist in the 49.6 kg class. Dylan Rinaldis finished fourth in the 55kg class; he was forced to withdraw with a dislocated shoulder after winning his first two matches.

Also, Roberts was the site that day for the Kids and Novice festival. In the Kids division (under 13), Russell Cates took gold in the 42 kg class. Dustin Dixon, wrestling in the 49 kg class, also took home gold. Connor Amyot settled for silver after dropping a 5-2 decision in the championship final of the 46.6 kg class. On the girls' side, Julie Graham won silver the in the female 61 kg class.
