When you first get your log home built you will want to start with a product that will protect your wood against the attack of insects. This treatment is best applied by spraying it on while the logs are still moist, but can also be brushed on. It is best used right from the start as the moisture in the wood draws the treatment into it. I prefer to use a product called PeneTreat. It is a borate-based wood preservative that will not only help for most insects that destroy wood, but also protects against rot and fungi.

After you let the first treatment totally dry you will need to think about stain and chinking which helps to protect your logs even further. Log stain can be either applied before you chink or after the choice is yours. I prefer to stain first as it makes the chinking stand out after and gives your log home a really unique look. When deciding on the color of your stain you should always ask the supplier about which products they would recommend for your area.

Not all stains are made equal and some will not work well in northern climates due to the harsh effects of the elements in those zones. You also have a choice of using water based solutions or oil based ones. In my opinion you are better off using oil based types for a number of reasons, however they are more expensive and the water based types do work quite well if you choose to go that route.

Turn off the water – Look for the handles on the pipes that run to your faucet. (Usually these are found under the sink.) Turn the handles clockwise to turn off the water running to the faucet.

Plug the sink drain – Once the water has been turned off, plug the sink drain with either the plug if you have it or use a rag. This is to prevent anything from going down the sink while you are in the process of fixing things.

Take the faucet handles off – Use a screwdriver to take out the screw that holds the handles on but keep in mind this could be hidden behind a metal cover. Once the screw is out, you may have to pry the faucet handles a little, but go ahead and take them right off.

Replace the washer – Behind the handles should be a washer. Take off the old washer, if there was one, and replace it with a new washer.

Put the faucet handles back on – With a new washer in place, screw the faucet handles back on the sink.

Turn the water back on and test – Go ahead and unplug the drain and then turn the water back on to your faucet. This time, counter clockwise. Test out your faucet and see if the leaks are gone.
